An injured student writhing in pain after police allegedly beat them up during a clash at Banaras Hindu University late Saturday night.
A Station House Officer (SHO) of Lanka area, Circle Officer (CO) of Bhelupur and one Additional City Magistrate (ACM) were removed after held prima facie responsible for imposing lathi-charge at Varanasi's Banaras Hindu University (BHU).

A number of students, including women, and two journalists were injured in a lathicharge by the police in the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) where a protest on Saturday night against an alleged eve- teasing incident turned violent.

According to reports protest turned violent as one of the protesters tried to set campus property on fire. However, speaking to dnaindia.com, one of the students said that the police used force to vacate protestors from outside Vice Chancellors's residence.

Students also alleged that woman cops were not present when the incident took place. In a video that has emerged, cops can be seen repeatedly hitting woman students with lathi.

"We were peacefully protesting demanding basic safety measures. But since we did not get any response, we sat outside the Vice-Chancellor's residence. However, the VC did not meet us and police were ordered to lathi-charge and forcefully evacuate students," said Ananya, a second-year History (Hons) student.

The university authorities called the protests the work of ‘anti-national’ forces who are trying to malign BHU’s image.

“This protest was completely political in nature because it was timed with the PM’s visit, with the intention of soiling the image of the university,” the BHU administration stated in a media release.

Congress leaders PL Punia, Raj Babbar and Ajay Rai were also detained by police, ahead of their participation in the students' protest march at BHU.

Following the violence, the district administration declared holidays from Monday till October 2 in all colleges and universities in Varanasi. The BHU had earlier announced that the holidays would start from September 28.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today sought a report from the divisional commissioner about the incident as various political parties, including the Samajwadi Party (SP), criticised the government and condemned the police action.

"I have sought a report from the divisional commissioner, Varanasi, about the entire incident," Adityanath said in Lucknow.

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi has also hit out at BJP government saying, the incident is BJP version of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao in BHU.

Nearly 1,500 police personnel, including contingents of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), have been deployed to maintain law and order in the campus.
