Marshal of IAF Arjan Singh will be remembered for generations to come: Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday expressed condolences over the demise of Marshal of the Indian Air Force (IAF) Arjan Singh and said that his exemplary life will be remembered for generations to come.

"It's a great loss for the country. Marshal of the Indian Air force Arjan Singh has led an exemplary life as a soldier. He fought several wars and became the air chief at a very young age of 48. The conduct and the exemplary nature in which he conducted himself is something which will be remembered for generations."

Sitharaman further asserted that Arjan Singh brought a great sense and spirit of nationalism by his sheer conduct.

"He brought a great sense and sprit of nationalism by his sheer conduct. I remember when Prime Minister visited him in hospital and told him not to get up to salute him, but he resisted. He stood up proud as a great soldier," she said.

The Defence Minister further said he comes from a family whose father, grandfather and great grandfather all been in military service.

The political fraternity joined the nation in mourning the death of the great soldier saying it was a great loss to the nation that the inspirational man is no more.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi has expressed her deepest condolences on the passing away of Air Marshall, Arjan Singh.

"He was an outstanding soldier and a diplomat who led from the front. Arjan Singh will be particularly remembered for his successful operation on the Burma Front during World War II," Gandhi said.

"He was a jewel in the throne of our Armed Forces and his extraordinary contribution as an Air warrior would always be a source of inspiration to us, she added.

Gandhi conveyed her sympathies to his family and offered prayers for the departed soul.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted, "My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members of Shri Arjan Singh. May God give them strength to bear this colossal loss (sic)."

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also took to Twitter and wrote, "Maharashtra salutes and pays tributes to the great inspiration and a great leader, Marshal of the IAF ArjanSingh ji (sic) !"

Senior Congress Party leader Mallikarjun Kharge said, "India has lost one of its great warriors. I pray to the almighty to give strength to his family to bear this untimely loss and his soul rest in peace."

India's pride Marshal of the Indian Air Force Arjan Singh passed away on Saturday.

Marshal of IAF Singh was admitted to Army's Research and Referral hospital this morning after he suffered a cardiac arrest, the defence ministry said.

Arjan Singh was a respectable figure of the Indian military history.

Marshal of IAF, Arjan Singh had led a young air force into the 1965 Indo-Pak war when he was about 44-year-old.

The Marshal has been awarded the Padma Vibhushan for his leadership during the war.

The Marshal flew over 60 aircrafts and remained a flyer until the end of his career with the IAF.

Five-star Marshal Arjan Singh retired in August 1969. In 2016, the crucial air base at Panagarh Air Force Station was renamed after the Marshal. Panagarh is also the headquarters of the newly raised 17 Crops - Mountain Strike Corps. (ANI)
