The blockbuster adaptation of Stephen King's 1986 novel of the same name as pushed past The Exorcist to become the highest-grossing horror film on a domestic basis, reports Entertainment Weekly.
The Andres Muschietti directed movie has made $236.34 million domestically in mere 14 days. In contrast, The Exorcist had grossed $232.9 million domestically.
The Exorcist became the genre's highest grossing title of all time at the domestic box office, unadjusted for inflation.
But, The Exorcist is still the top-grossing horror film on an international basis, having netted $441.3 million globally to IT's $404.3 million.
This isn't the only record the movie has broken during its short tenure in theatres so far.
The picture's $123.4 million opening weekend registered the biggest September debut (a bar previously set by Hotel Transylvania 2's $48.5 million debut back in 2015), the largest opening for a horror release, and the second-best three-day frame for an R-rated movie.
The film is also the ninth highest-grossing R-rated release in history and the highest-grossing September release.
IT is directed by Andres Muschietti and stars Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise, along with a kid-heavy cast that includes Jaeden Lieberher, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, and Finn Wolfhard.
The movie follows a band of outcast teenagers as they battle a sinister force that's terrorizing their town.
