Would your kid aged nine to 11 rather neck fizzy cola than drink milk? You are not alone, suggests a recent study.

The findings revealed that almost half of primary school children do not drink milk and two thirds of them aged nine to 11 do not touch their glasses of milk, as kids prefer fizzy drinks more.

You may want to encourage your children to add milk to their diet, as the study found that it is a rich source of protein, calcium, vitamin B12 and iodine for a healthier future.

"With more than one in five children during their first year of primary school being overweight or obese, there is a renewed focus on children's eating habits," said Stefan managing director of Tetra Pak.

"Children need a healthy balanced diet and as milk is a rich source of protein, calcium, vitamin B12 and iodine, it is - and should continue to be - a part of our children's daily diet for a healthier future," Fagerang explained.

According to a survey of 1,000 parents and 500 nursery school teachers by Tetra Pak, many children are missing out on the health benefits of the drink, reports the Mirror.

The report is calling for free school milk for all primary school kids - not just those aged up to five years old.

And in a further blow to the dairy industry, figures from the Food Standards Agency revealed almost half of 16-24-year-olds believe they are allergic to milk.

Overall, one in five children has reported a bad reaction from milk and milk based products.

"People wrongly assume that dairy is bad for them because of its fat content, without considering the other nutritional benefits it offers," said a Dairy UK spokesperson.

"We have to fight that cause and encourage people to eat more," he added. (ANI)
