No one can defame Taj Mahal, it's part of our culture and history: CM Yogi Adityanath

Days after BJP MLA Sangeet Som stoked a controversy, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said that no one can defame Taj Mahal as it's a part of our culture and history.

“Taj Mahal is part of our culture and history and by going there I wish to send across a message to the international community that it is part of our heritage and that no one should try to defame it, ” Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath told CNN-News18.

The Chief Minister also said that the BJP will also not abandon either of its key agenda, that of development and Ram temple in Ayodhya.

“Development for me comes with the name of Ram and we are here for both the jobs,” he said.

Yogi Adityanath has already announced that he would visit Agra to review tourism schemes.

Last week, Som had questioned the 17th-century architectural marvel place in India's heritage and said history would be rewritten to erase Mughal emperors from it.

Som, the party's legislator from Sardhana, also distorted history to say it was built by an emperor who had imprisoned his father and targeted Hindus.

Som's comments during a visit to Meerut district prompted an angry response from All India Majlis-e- Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader and Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi who asked if the government would tell tourists not to visit the monument.

The BJP Rajya Sabha member Vinay Katiyar had also claimed that Shah Jahan had destroyed a Hindu temple to build the monument. “Taj Mahal is a Hindu temple that was known as Tejo Mahalaya. It was a Shiva temple that was demolished by Shah Jahan to build the Taj Mahal.”
