Despite being denied permission to visit Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday reached the riot-hit area, interacted with locals and asserted that the Yogi Government has failed to establish law and order situation in the state.
“In today’s India, there is no place for poor people. The government has failed on law and order in Uttar Pradesh. The role of the government is to provide safety to all citizens of the nation but the government failed to do so,’ Gandhi said. He said that the Uttar Pradesh administration asked him to leave, as the situation is not stable. “The Uttar Pradesh administration asked me to leave. They will later take me to the village once the situation becomes stable,” he further said.
However, the police did try to stop the Congress vice-president but the latter adamantly reached the clash-affected area to take stock of the situation.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Srikant Sharma called Rahul Gandhi a ‘tragedy tourist’.
“Congress government has been a big flop during their regime. Our motive is to improve the facilities. Rahul Gandhi is a tragedy tourist. The citizens do not trust Rahul Gandhi and his company,” BJP leader and Uttar Pradesh Power Minister Shrikant Sharma told media on Saturday afternoon.
Asserting that the Yogi-government is making efforts to improve the law and order in the state, Sharma further appealed to the politicians not to visit Saharanpur.
“Since the last 15 years, the law and order situation in the state has been disturbed. The process of changing this disturbance will take time which has already begun by the Yogi Government. Police department and government are working on the matter. We request the politicians to avoid visiting Saharanpur at such a critical point,” he added.
Union Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu also lashed out at the Congress vice-president for his attempt to visit Saharanpur while dubbing him as a 'photo opportunist'.
Speaking to ANI, Naidu said, "Rahul Gandhi is a photo-opportunist, whenever there is a photo opportunity he always goes there."
Union Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Kalraj Mishra on Saturday said that the former should cancel his visit so as to avoid any further communal clashes.
‘Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur has become a sensitive area now and social harmony is being attacked. At this moment, his visit will make things more worse. It will hamper on a social level. His visit may entice another such communal clash which will affect the country,’ Mishra told ANI.
Mishra asserted that just because BSP chief Mayawati visited the region that does not mean Rahul should also do so.
‘It will be like playing with public’s feelings,’ he added.
Mishra while speaking on the law and order of Uttar Pradesh said that the Yogi government has completed nearly two months and they are definitely trying hard to control the ongoing situation.
Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and Raj Babbar, also discussed the deteriorating situation prevailing in the state with the locals there. Clashes broke out earlier after Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati's visit to Saharanpur, where one person was killed and several others were injured.
In the wake of clashes between two communities in Saharanpur, the Yogi Adityanath Government transferred 174 Sub-Divisional Magistrates.
On May 5, one person was killed and 16 people, including a head constable, were injured in clashes between the Dalits and the Rajputs in Shabbirpur and Simlana villages. (ANI)
